I don’t even need to read it to know that. In any and all self-defense situations, one needs to stay on their feet! Learning grapple-escapes has immense value, but you can do that on your feet too! Once they got you down, it’s certainly over for you.

That’s the bottom line!

I have taken striking martial arts disciplines off and on since I was young (with having the longest martial arts stint in BJJ) and some self-defense components were embedded in those classes. Also, I've taken classes on security and situational awareness which was helpful too despite me being voluntold to do so haha. So I see BJJ giving me some more confidence on dealing with being on the ground if it gets to that point.

I actually started BJJ due to a stalking situation while I was in Chicago for a conference. Luckily I got out of the situation due to situational awareness and randomizing where I was walking amongst other tactics until I finally ran into some colleagues also attending the conference. All I could think of was "what would have happened if that gets on the ground." I remembered one of the first things I learned in self-defense is to stay up. One point of criticism for the embedded self-defense modules in my martial arts classes is that they focused a lot on standing self-defense but not so much if it got to the ground. I felt like I need to be ready (as I can) if it gets to the ground and have some idea of dealing with struggle and pressure.

My first layer of self-defense though is just having a lot of situational awareness and being aware of my surroundings. I'll have my keys out or cellphone with a strap to use if needed outside their intended use. Really though, it would just be nice to not be stalked or street harassed (which is increasing by frequency and intensity each year) but that's a rant for another time!
